Secret rare and first edition Pokémon cards to catch in Lichfield auction

A SINGLE Pokémon card could sell for more than £1,500 at auction in Lichfield next week.

The first edition Neo Destiny Shining Charizard is a ‘secret rare’ card numbered 107/105 and is one of several special Pokémon lots offered by Richard Winterton Auctioneers on Monday, June 17.

The sale takes place at The Lichfield Auction Centre, Wood End Lane, Fradley Park, starting at 9.30am.

Lot 535 is the Neo Destiny Shining Charizard, pictured, guided at £1,000 to £1,500.

A mega-popular Flame Pokémon, the Shining Charizard character is said to be 5ft 7ins, 800lb, and capable of breathing white-hot flames which ‘can melt anything’.

The card is one of seven to be sold separately from Lot 530 to Lot 536 on behalf of a client from Nottinghamshire, who contacted Richard Winterton Auctioneers following recent successful Pokémon sales.

Other single cards in the auction include Lot 536, a Skyridge Charizard reverse holo card numbered 146/144, guided at £700 to £900.

Lot 533 is a first edition Base Set Venusaur and Lot 534 a first edition Neo Genesis Lugia; each single card is guided at £400 to £600.

Three other Charizard cards will also be sold separately.

Two of these are ‘shadowless’ Base Set Charizards, so-called as they lack the shadow effect on the border of the picture, making them rarer and, consequently, more valuable.

Going under the hammer as Lots 531 and 532, these are guided at £350 to £450 each.

Lot 530 is a regular Base Set Charizard card.

Other Pokémon TCG in the sale includes collections of cards from the Base Set, Base Set 2, Jungle, Fossil and Team Rocket sets, catalogued across Lot 537 to 540.

Auctioneer Richard Winterton said: “After the wonderful sales we’ve has recently, we have been inundated with Pokémon cards coming in to us at The Lichfield Auction Centre.

“Our team is continuously delighted at the variety of Pokémon treasures which keep coming to light.”

Last month, a hotly contested collection of Pokémon cards sold at auction in Lichfield for a total hammer price of £55,270.

Bidders from all over the world joined the auction online and in the saleroom as the single owner collection went under the hammer.

Dating from the late 1990s to the early 2000s and totalling 2,407 cards, the collection included 15 complete or master sets of Pokémon cards, the majority by American publisher Wizards of the Coast, with a further lot of 16 Pokémon box toppers – promotional oversized versions of cards.

The sale was joined online by people from all over the world, with 21 bidders in America plus people in Japan and China amongst the international bidders.

Highlights included a complete Skyridge master set, which sold for £18,000 to a UK bidder online against fierce competition from a bidder in the room.

A room bidder also put up a fight for a complete Aquapolis master set, which was also won by a UK bidder online at £8,000.

Another room bidder successfully battled against online competition from the USA for a complete Legendary Collection master set, which sold at £8,600.
