August 6th, 2025

Formerly of The Hammersley Collection
THREE 'superb examples' of 19th century British gold sovereigns go under the hammer with Richard Winterton Auctioneers later this month.
The trio, previously sold as part of The Hammersley Collection Of Exceptional British Milled Sovereigns, will be offered for sale on Tuesday, August 26, at The Lichfield Auction Centre.
Sealed in individual protective cases, the coins have all been graded 'MS' by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (Mint State – coins struck in the same format as circulation issues).
Lot 401 is a Victoria full gold sovereign coin dated 1872, shield back, bare head, die 109, graded NSG MS63. Estimate £3,000 to £3,500.
Lot 402 is a George III full gold sovereign dated 1820, short date with closed 2, graded NGC MS64 with star, the star denoting exceptional eye appeal for the assigned grade. Estimate £7,500 to £8,000.
Lot 403 is a George III full gold sovereign dated 1820, tall date with open 2, graded HGC MS64. Estimate £6,500 to £7,000.
The sale on Tuesday, August 18, at The Lichfield Auction Centre, Wood End Lane, Fradley Park, begins with furniture at 9am with coins and jewellery starting at 10.30am.
Viewing in person takes place on Friday, August 22, between 10am and 4pm. The catalogue goes live online a week before the sale and can be viewed via our Auction Calendar.
