Sale date Monday 18th August

TWO iconic examples of 20th century design are amongst the treasures going for auction in Lichfield soon.

A pair of diamond earrings crafted by legendary jewellery designer Andrew Grima and a rare solid gold Rolex are set to be sold at The Lichfield Auction Centre by Richard Winterton Auctioneers on Monday, August 18.

The boxed pair of 18ct white gold diamond-set Grima London floral cluster earrings, pictured above, date back to 1983, have an estimated total diamond weight of 3.60ct and a starting guide of £2,800.

Widely regarded as the father of modern jewellery, Andrew Grima was born in Rome in 1921 and grew up in London.

By the mid-1960s he had become the society jeweller of the day, with numerous commissions for Royalty.

Head of jewellery Lisa Spence said: “Grima changed how people all over the world perceive jewellery.

“He’s one of the great modernist jewellery designers of the 20th century, with signature styles incorporating bold, organic forms frequently mimicking natural shapes.

“His achievements are all the more remarkable as he was self-taught in the trade.”

Grima, who died in 2007 aged 86, won the De Beers Diamonds International Award – regarded as the Oscars of jewellery design – a record 11 times and his work can be seen in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.

“The pair of earrings going to auction on August 18 are in very good condition with nice, bright, lively diamonds,” added Lisa.

“Each earring is set to the centre with seven round brilliant cut and old cut diamonds, each in a four-claw setting, to the surround of single cut diamond set petals.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to add a superb example of the work of one of the 20th century’s most iconic jewellers to your collection.”
