Time flies at auction! Watches uncovered in Burntwood exceed £30,000

RARE watches uncovered in Burntwood have sold for more than £30,000 at auction in Lichfield.

The timepieces were consigned for sale following free valuations by Richard Winterton Auctioneers at the town’s library in Sankeys Corner, Bridge Cross Road.

Four wristwatches belonging to one client sold for £12,640 in the family firm’s Fine Art Sale at the end of November.

Other Burntwood finds in the auction included a single owner collection of important pocket watches, which totalled £7,320, and an 18ct gold and diamond Rolex Day-Date, which realised a total of £13,400.

“We’ve had a wonderful warm welcome for our valuations in Burntwood and made lots of new friends since starting in August,” said associate director and watch specialist Ben Winterton.

“It’s been brilliant to achieve such fantastic results for our customers in our latest Fine Art Sale and we still have one more valuation event at the library before Christmas on December 13.

“As the latest results show, you just never know what treasures are out there.

Rare watches uncovered in Burntwood included a Jaeger-LeCoultre Mark XI ‘White 12’ RAF pilot’s watch, sold at £5,600; a 1969 Omega Seamaster ‘bullhead’ chronograph, sold at £4,200; and a Breitling Navitimer 806 – the model seen worn by the ill-fated Major Duval in the 1965 James Bond classic Thunderball – sold at £2,200.

Amongst the collection of pocket watches were a gilded brass George lll pair cased quarter repeater by Daniel & Thomas Grignion circa 1760, sold at £1,900; an 18ct gold late Victorian half hunter, sold at £1,800; and a George lll silver ‘Oignon’ pair case signed John Shepherd circa 1790, sold at £1,350.

Other items causing a stir in Richard Winterton’s November Fine Art Sale included an early 20th century diamond dress ring sold at £4,200; a necklace created from gold sovereign coins, sold at £6,000; and seven lots of designer illustrations for military jewellery totalling £4,800.

Also popular were an LS Lowry print ‘The Family’ (sold £2,300), a Martin Brothers stoneware vase (sold £2,000) and a George V silver tea set (sold £1,900).

Free valuations at Burntwood Library, WS7 2BX, take place on Tuesdays from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, with specialists assessing all types of watches, jewellery, gold and silver.

Other pop-up valuations continue at The Hub at St Mary’s in Lichfield city centre from 9.30am-11am on Tuesdays and at Burton Market Hall on Monday mornings.

Free valuations are also available at The Lichfield Auction Centre, Fradley Park, and The Tamworth Auction Rooms, Church Street.
