'White glove sale' a huge success
A HUGE single-owner collection of coins has netted £286,845 at auction in Lichfield today, Tuesday, April 21.
Richard Winterton Auctioneers' Private Coin Collection Sale at The Lichfield Auction Centre featured 206 lots catalogued following a recent house clearance.

Today's special auction spanned two centuries of coins from 1800 to 2025 with comprehensive collections of sovereigns, half-sovereigns, guineas, half-guineas and quarter-guineas.
The sale included numerous Royal Mint proof sets in capsules, untouched by human hands; Victorian and George III sovereigns in good circulated condition; and a comprehensive collection of sterling silver proof coins.
Every single lot sold, earning the auction the singular distinction known as a 'white glove sale'.
Highlights included Lot 67, The Royal Mint 2012 Olympic Gold Proof Nine Coin Collection 'Citius, Altius, Fortius', in mint condition with original display case, packaging and paperwork, selling at £12,100.
This 22ct gold series celebrates the Olympic coin programme of the London 2012 games with three 1oz coins – Neptune, Jupiter and Mars – and six 1/4oz coins – Mercury, Diana, Juno, Apollo, Minerva and Vulcan.
Lot 34, a 1937 Royal Mint Gold Specimen Four Coin Collection, consisting of a half-sovereign, sovereign, two pound coin and five pound coin, all in 22ct gold.
Only 5,501 sets like this were struck. This set, in excellent condition with original red leatherette display case, sold today at £11,500.
Another popular lot was Lot 47, The Sovereign 2015 Fourth and Fifth Portrait Collections, a double Royal Mint set with two five coin sets in a single box, fetching £11,600.
Each set comprised a quarter-sovereign, half-sovereign, sovereign, double-sovereign and five-sovereign piece in mint condition, with original display boxes, packaging and paperwork.
