Preview: Private Coin Collection including Royal Mint proof sets, Victorian and George III sovereigns in Lichfield auction

A HUGE single-owner collection of coins goes under the hammer with Richard Winterton Auctioneers on Tuesday, April 21.
The Private Coin Collection Sale featuring 206 lots starts at 9am at The Lichfield Auction Centre, Wood End Lane, Fradley Park.
This incredible auction following a recent house clearance spans two centuries from 1800 to 2025 with comprehensive collections of sovereigns, half-sovereigns, guineas, half-guineas and quarter-guineas.
There are numerous Royal Mint proof sets in capsules, untouched by human hands, Victorian and George III sovereigns in good circulated condition, and a comprehensive collection of sterling silver proof coins.

Here are some of the highlights:
Lot 1

The Royal Mint – 500th Anniversary Of The First Gold Sovereign 1489-1989 Gold Proof Sovereign.
The collection consists of a half sovereign, sovereign, double-sovereign and five-pound coin, limited edition number 0521 of 5000, struck in 22ct gold, in proof condition with original display box and paperwork.
Lot 34

The Royal Mint – 1937 Gold Speciment Four Coin Collection, consisting of a half-sovereign, sovereign, two pound coin and five pound coin.
All are struck in 22ct gold and are in excellent condition with original red leatherette display case. Only 5501 sets were struck.
Lot 47

The Royal Mint – The Soveriegn 2015 Five Coin Set, fourth and fifth portrait collections. This is a double set with two five coin sets in a single box.
The first set is the fourth Queen Elizabeth II portrait collection and the second set is her fifth portrait first edition.
Each of the two coin sets consist of a quarter-sovereign, half-sovereign, sovereign, double-sovereign and five-sovereign piece
Obverse designer for the fourth portrait set is Ian Rank-Broadley, with Jody Clark obverse designer for the fifth portrait set. Reverse designer for both sets is Benedetto Pistrucci.
All coins are in mint condition with original display boxes, packaging and paperwork. Fourth portrait set is number 235 of 500; fifth portrait first edition set is number 190 of 350.
Lot 67

The Royal Mint – 2012 Olympic Gold Proof Nine Coin Collection 'Citius, Altius, Fortius'.
This gold series celebrates the Olympic coin programme of the London 2012 games.
All coins have been struck in 22ct gold and the set consists of three 1oz coins – Neptune, Jupiter and Mars – and six 1/4oz coins – Mercury, Diana, Juno, Apollo, Minerva and Vulcan.
All coins are in mint condition with original display case, packaging and paperwork, number 0389 of 1000.
