AN ‘IMPRESSIVE’ collection of Great Britain stamps is set to fetch several thousands of pounds when it goes under the hammer with Richard Winterton Auctioneers this month.
Consigned by a client from Lichfield, the collection will be sold at The Tamworth Auction Rooms in Church Street on Wednesday, November 27, starting at 9.30am.
Comprising eight albums in total, the archive will be sold as a single lot estimated at £3,500 to £4,000.
Highlights include four Penny Blacks, one with four large margins and two further examples as used on original covers; two 1840 Twopenny Blues and two 1840 Mulreadys – the world’s first pre-paid postal stationary, named after the artist William Mulready who was commissioned to illustrate it.
There is a fine mint condition 1902 to 1912 basic set, a rare King Edward VII £1 green, a ‘Sea Horses’ set including a fine mint £1 and a 1929 Postal Union Congress £1 stamp, also fine mint.
The collection continues up to 2021 with many mint commemoratives providing high face value.
Richard Winterton Auctioneers’ philately expert Phil Ives said: “This is a quality collection with some stamps of which good quality examples are hard to get hold of.
“The 1929 PUC £1 was just the second British commemorative stamp issued and is one of the finest examples of British philately, often described as one of the most beautiful GB stamps ever.
“An act of Parliament in 1840 saw the introduction of the penny post, a system under which a letter of up to ½oz could be sent anywhere in the UK for one penny.
“The letter could either be a prepaid envelope or wrapper – known as a Mulready – or an adhesive stamp that acted as a receipt to show that the service had been purchased.
“The first stamp, the Penny Black, was printed for less than a year and came in imperforate sheets which had to be hand-cut with big scissors.
“As a consequence, examples of hand-cut stamps with four clear margins are relatively rare.”
He added: “This is a lovely, well-presented GB stamps collection and inspection is invited to view the quality.”
The catalogue will be live online a week before the auction and can be viewed online here.
Viewing in person takes place at The Tamworth Auction Rooms on Tuesday, November 26, from 10am-4pm.
