Goldfinger experts bring the Midas touch to Tamworth
THE experts who discovered a classic James Bond movie poster in Tamworth which went on to sell for what is thought to be the highest price ever paid at auction are to host free valuation days in the town.Richard Winterton – a regular on television programmes such as Bargain Hunt and Dickinson's Real Deal – will be in the Wedgwood Suite at the Castle Hotel, Ladybank, on Monday, September 3 from 11am-12.30pm.
He will be accompanied by valuers Rob French (wine, whisky, port, cigars and ephemera), Philip Bridge (coins and banknotes) and Stuart Hay (records and technology).
Another team of specialists from Richard Winterton Auctioneers will be back at the same venue on September 24.
The family firm had a client in double-0 heaven earlier this year when a rare Sean Connery-era James Bond poster discovered rolled up at an address in Dosthill sold at auction for £6,700.
The 1964 Goldfinger ‘Style B’ cinema poster by Robert Brownjohn was designed as a reaction to strict morality laws in Ireland.
It replaced the main Goldfinger poster featuring a bikini-clad figure with just a gold-painted hand ‘reflecting’ Connery and co-star Honor Blackman.
As well as sidestepping the censor, the move also inadvertently created an ultra-collectable piece of movie memorabilia.
The winning bid of £6,700 to a client over the telephone in June 2018 is thought to be one of the highest prices paid to date for such a poster.
Mr Winterton said: “It just proves that you never know what lies behind each and every door.
“We are really looking forward to meeting the people of Tamworth and putting a value to their items.
“Something someone thinks might just be tat could turn out to be an absolute treasure – come and see us and find out.”
Following the Tamworth valuations, the team will set up at The Trinity Centre, Church Hill, Mill Street, in Sutton Coldfield from 2-3.30pm on the same day.
Richard Winterton Auctioneers also carries out free general valuations at The Lichfield Auction Centre at Wood End Lane, Fradley Park, every Tuesday from 9.30am-4pm and free jewellery valuations every Friday from 9.30am-4pm.
