Eye-catching antiques in Fine Arts

THE June 2019 Fine & Decorative Arts Sale has something for everyone, writes Sarah Leedham.

The terms ‘objet d’art’ and ‘works of art’ encompass such a large section of antiques and cover many genres and mediums. But the one common denominator is it’s a very popular area of collecting as a whole!

Here are a tempting trio of antiques up for auction on June 19 which have caught my eye:

Lot 108: A Victorian silver novelty pepperette

A lovely pepperette in the form of an owl has a pull-off cover and is set with red and black glass eyes. This fine fellow was made by George Unite, Birmingham 1867, approximate weight 2.7ozt, 86 grams, height 8.5cm. Est: £200 - £300 plus Buyer's Premium

Lot 326: A 19th century scrimshaw powder horn

This is just so beautifully intricate! Decorated with a steam train named 'Lion' pulling carriages and wagons towards buildings and a bridge, further decorated with three sail ships, a church, buildings, figures, the sun, moon and stars, flowers, foliage and a heart... such delicate work took my breath away. Some areas are coloured red, the heart is painted red and gilt and there's a metal mount to the base. Length approximately 38cm. Est: £200 - £300 plus Buyer's Premium

Lot 430: An early 19th century needlework of a tiger

This I think is rather splendid, too. A lovely needlework picture of a prowling tiger dating back to the 19th century, the striking landscape features a palm tree (whose trunk seems to mirror the tail of a big cat!) with another tree in the top right hand corner with beautiful textured embroidered leaves. Presented in a contemporary mahogany frame. Needlework approximately 64cm x 72cm. Est: £200 - £300 plus Buyer's Premium
