Global interest sees Pokémon cards sell for thousands at auction in Lichfield
June 9th, 2025

Hammer prices total £17,220
POKÉMON fans from across the world focussed on Lichfield as a collection of rare cards went under the hammer for thousands of pounds this week.
Internet buyers online battled bidders in the room for 17 lots of Pokémon, including 10 complete or near-complete sets, sold with Richard Winterton Auctioneers on Monday, June 9.
A single Pokémon card – a Shining Charizard 107/105 1st edition from the Neo Destiny set – sold for £1,250.
Other highlights included a complete 1st edition Neo Revelation set including Shining Magikarp and Shining Gyarados, pictured top of page, sold at £3,400; a collection of rare 1st edition Pokémon Base Set cards, sold at £2,000; a complete 1st edition Team Rocket set, sold at £1,700; and a complete 1st edition Fossil set, sold at £1,200.
Hammer prices for all 17 lots totalled £17,220.
The collection was consigned at The Lichfield Auction Centre, Wood End Lane, Fradley Park, following a routine valuation.

Auctioneer Richard Winterton said: “You may remember that a couple of years ago we sold a wonderful Pokémon collection for £250,000.
“We’re proud to have a great reputation for selling Pokémon and because of that we continue to receive countless consignments and requests for valuations from all over the UK.
“This latest collection had us very excited and, following a huge amount of pre-sale interest, went on to exceed expectations at auction.
“One of the highlights was a single Pokémon card – the Shining Charizard 1st edition from Neo Destiny – selling at a fantastic £1,250.
“It never fails to impress me how Pokémon has exploded into a global sensation – and it still continues to grow bigger and bigger.”
