Going for gold with sports memorablia
Monday, 27 January, 2020 - Modified on Monday, 02 March, 2020 at 1:40 pm
THIS year there is a full calendar of sporting events to look forward to and, with this in mind, you may have a sporting memorabilia item at home that would benefit from a valuation at Richard Winterton Auctioneers, writes valuer Ian Allsop.
The RBS 6 Nations Rugby games began in February, with matches likely to be keenly contested following the passion of the Rugby World Cup last year.
A high calibre of rugby memorabilia came through the auction house last October, with some very good prices realised for shirts and paper memorabilia.
Football will kick off with the European Championships being held in June in the UK and other European countries. England to bring home a trophy this year…? Programmes, autobiographies, tickets and shirts were all sought after.
July sees the All England Tennis Championships at Wimbledon – let’s hope the weather is kind to us. Rackets, books and autographs being star attractions at auction.
Cricket runs from April to September, heralding the start of the new 100 tournament, to be followed by the West Indies and Pakistan touring teams. Bats, tickets, photographs and autographs bought by collectors in the October sale.
Golf also tees off in July with the Open Championship at Royal St George’s. Balls, clubs, books and signed items were seen to spark collectors’ interest last year.
The Olympic games take centre stage in Tokyo in July and August, with a multitude of events. Athletics memorabilia in the form of vests, running shoes, tickets and autographs all sold well last year.
Cycling (Tour de France) and Snooker (World Championships) will also stage major events, both these sports having some unusual collectable items selling last year. Boxing, racing and motorsports also had some interesting lots.
Whatever your favourite sport(s), there will have plenty to keep you entertained, and if you do have some sporting memorabilia at home, please bring it into the saleroom, where I will be delighted to give you impartial advice on its value and whether to submit it for sale at auction.
Ian Allsop offers free valuations of sporting memorabilia at The Lichfield Auction Centre every Tuesday from 9am to 12 noon.
