On the lookout for Lichfield treasures

A LIMITED edition silver box celebrating the Queen’s 1977 Jubilee and enamelled with an idyllic scene of Lichfield Cathedral is among a number of newly discovered items linked to the city.
Now Lichfield’s auctioneer Richard Winterton is on a quest to discover more treasures related to the area.
The silver snuff or pill box bears the hallmarks from the Birmingham Assay Office and features a portrait of the Queen to celebrate her Silver Jubilee.
Sarah Leedham, senior valuer at Richard Winterton Auctioneers, said: “The box measures just shy of 5cm across, is enamelled to the lid with an idyllic scene of Lichfield Cathedral and has a gilt-lined interior.
“The maker’s or sponsor’s mark is for F.G. Flavell Ltd of Stourbridge and it is numbered 15 – how many in the edition were made is not known at this time.”
Mr Winterton, auctioneer of television favourites Bargain Hunt and Dickinson's Real Deal, added: “The box is a lovely little thing. It would be fascinating to see if any other Lichfeldians out there have similar silver items commemorating the city itself or an important event, such as the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.”
Along with the box is a small collection of Lichfield-related silver and enamel spoons and medallions.
One of the medallions bears an enamel image of St Chad’s Church and two of the spoons feature Lichfield Cathedral.
The items all feature in the next Fine & Decorative Arts Sale on March 20 at The Lichfield Auction Centre, Wood End Lane, Fradley Park.
Richard Winterton Auctioneers also offers free valuations of jewellery, antiques and collectables every Tuesday between 9.30am-4pm at the Fradley auction centre.
