Strong sales at Coins, Medals and Militaria auction

COLLECTRS of coins, medals and militaria flocked to Richard Winterton Auctioneers’ sale on Monday (July 23) and here are some of the highlights.

An 1894 $20 gold piece (pictured right) weighing almost an ounce on a 9ct gold mount sold for £1,000.

An Edward IV gold medal, struck for his coronation in August 1902, made £480.

An album of 60 silver medals (pictured above) by John Pinches made £620.

And four gold sovereigns from 1911, 1913, 1908 and 1910 all sold for £200 each.

In the medals section, a WW1 medal and poignant letters from a Tamworth soldier who drowned in the Mediterranean made £130.

Sapper Thomas Rei Hartwell of the Royal Engineers died a couple of months shy of his 21st birthday when the troopship Cameronia was torpedoed in the Eastern Mediterranean by a German U-boat on April 15 1917.

A First World War Territorial and Volunteer Force archive of medals to members of the same family (pictured above) made £240 and an album containing 18 military interest badges fetched £170.

In the militaria section, an impressive set of WW1 cap badges (pictured above) sold for £220 and an 1827 pattern Russian pioneer’s swaback sword and scabbard (pictured below) made £360.

But star of the auction was a collection spread over Lots 186 to 192, predominantly German Third Reich items including caps, rank insignia, an SA dagger and scabbard and a Luftwaffe officer’s dress dagger, also with scabbard (Lots 188, 187 and 190 pictured below).

The collection totalled £1,670.

Nick Thompson, medals and militaria consultant at The Lichfield Auction Centre off Wood End Lane, Fradley Park, said: “There’s a strong collectors’ market for swords, bayonets and daggers.

“This is the second specialist military auction on the trot where we have achieved some good sales.”

Entries for the next Coins, Medals & Militaria Sale on October 1 are now invited.
