Richard Winterton proudly supports Consequence of War exhibition at Lichfield Cathedral

AUCTIONEER Richard Winterton is supporting an immersive new art installation at Lichfield Cathedral.

The Consequence of War runs until June 24 and takes the visitor on a journey through stories from 100 years of war and the impact on both those fighting and their loved ones back at home.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the exhibition is the vision of Lichfield Cathedral’s Dean, the Very Reverend Adrian Dorber, and has been imagined and curated by artist-in-residence, renowned sculptor Peter Walker.

Highlights include:

  • Yarn Front – a vivid new installation constructed from needles and red wool, suspended close to a film from women working in munitions factories
  • VC medals from Staffordshire Regiment on display for the first time
  • A cross made by comrades of Pte Gareth Bellingham, who was killed on duty in Afghanistan in 2011
  • Works by Henry Moore, Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland
  • Trench art, including a bullet carved with a cross
  • A pocket Bible which saved a soldier's life by stopping a bullet

Bringing the home front vividly to life is an authentic Edwardian sitting room installation – kitted out by Richard Winterton Auctioneers – where visitors can step back to 1918 and knit a woollen patch to “make do and mend” before penning a letter to a loved one at the front.

“This is an incredibly moving exhibition which everybody should see,” said Richard.

"Once seen, it most certainly won't be forgotten.

"It has been a privilege to be able to play a small part in such a landmark project."

Peter Walker, who has three new pieces of work on display, added: “Everyone becomes part of the machine of war, whether at home with bombs dropping overhead, or waiting to hear if your loved one has survived. Family life is changed forever.

“But this exhibition tells us that faith and love endure, and faith through art continues.”
