Auction report: Country House & Decorative Art Sale

Richard Winterton Auctioneers are pleased to report a very successful end to the summer with a saleroom so packed there was standing room only at their recent Country House and Fine Art Sale held Wednesday 7th September.

The sale had a wide variety on offer to suit all tastes and pockets. Jewellery and silver were flying out of the room with fierce competition on the telephones, internet and in the room on most lots. Highlights include a 19th Century Chinese wine cup which sold to the internet for £420, a pearl and diamond ring finally realising £1,100 to a telephone bidder, a two stone diamond side by side ring selling well over guide at £1,700, an 18 ct gold full hunter French chronograph quarter repeater realised £1,000 and a 3 carat solitaire diamond ring sold for £4,300.

Being advocates for brown furniture, there were some lovely pieces that we were able to cherry pick from recent clearances which included a diminutive 19th Century oak food cupboard which being rich in colour and very honest realised £1050, an early oak crossbanded mahogany country dresser £600, a very decorative continental occasional table and chairs with goat inlay went under the hammer for £550, a fine example Victorian pollard oak and oak mirror back sideboard £800 and a marquetry Dutch serpentine bombe cylinder bureau sold for £1200.

Ceramics performed well on the day, in particular Royal Worcester, both vintage and modern examples, with a bisque Nijinsky figure by Doris Lindner realising £420, a pair of John Stinton highland cattle pedestal vases and covers selling to the telephone for £2000 despite restoration and damage, in contrast to more recent fruit decorated pot pourri and covers, coffee cans and saucers, jugs, dishes and a tea canister which realised £3080 collectively. Proving that quality always sells despite damage, a pair of Boullemier signed Mintons vases with damage and restoration to both vases and covers still sold for £400.

Paintings were in demand with a collection of works by Charles Gorham (1916-1998) realising a total of £1,640, a contemporary Alan Cotton, Venice Riva Degli Schiavoni in Evening Light oil made £900, a pair of Robert Cleminson horse oils, £840 and a Sir John Kyffin Williams, lying sheepdog £1,300.

A good selection of vintage wines and whisky were consigned to the sale, with a bottle of Glenfiddich Straight Malt Scotch Whisky in carton realising £650, a bottle of 5 year old Glen Grant malt scotch whisky £120 and three bottles of vintage French red wines to include  Chateau-Lascombes Grand Cru Classe Margaux 1962 realised £480.
