Auction report: Country House & Decorative Art Sale
Thursday, 24 March, 2016
With the first day of Spring just around the corner, potential bidders flocked to the Lichfield Auction Centre for the first Country House & Decorative Art sale of 2016. The sale included a wide variety of selected items from across all auction categories, together with a specialist Fine Wine & Whisky sale and Tribal Art sale.
Following our standard sale format, the jewellery, watches and silver sections were first under the hammer. Pre-auction, there was significant interest in lot 15 - a Gentleman's stainless steel Rolex Submariner wristwatch, which reached the lower end of its guide, selling for £3,000. The highlight of the silver section was a four piece tea service dated to Sheffield 1968 which attracted interest from both online and room bidders with th ehammer finally falling at £1,250.
Moving to the cermamics section; tea and coffee sets are always popular with our buyer and this sale was no exception. A delightful Royal Worcester coffee can and saucer set sold for £900, with more Royal Worcester collectors bidding for two hand painted fruit plates (£200) and a mixed lot of a vase and plate selling for £340.
The furniture section also attracted interest, with a Swiss inlaid walnut music box sellilng for £550, a 19th Century walnut dressing table rached £650 and a mahogany eight day long case clock tripled its guide and sold for £700.
The quarterly Fine Wine & Whisky sale included many wines and whiskies from a local private collection. Highlights of this sale was a Longmorn scotch whisky selling for £300, a Port Ellen rare malts selling for £460, a Royal Oporto 1963 vintage port (£320) and a Glen Avon single highland malt scotch whisky for £300.
