Auction report: Fine & Decorative Art Sale

Tuesday, 01 December, 2015

Wednesday saw the first Fine & Decorative Art sale held in our new Auction Centre in Fradley Park. With a roomful of buyers in attendance and scores of telephone bids, the 700 lots drew interest from near and afar.

The busy sale got underway with the highly popular jewellery section, with many lots catching buyers interest. In particular, lot 15 – a pair of 18 carat gold diamond pearl ear pendants sailed past their guide, selling for £360 whilst another pair of earrings – lot 19, a pair of diamond earrings in a flower shape sold for £1,400.

A pair of Victorian silver salts, cast as a lady and gentlemen drew competition from room, telephone and internet bidders with the hammer finally falling at £3,200. A parcel of Georgian silver cutlery sold just above its guide at £750.

As part of the sale we were delighted to offer a private collection of Japanese netsukes. Netsukes originated in 17th Century Japan and were used by men who wore kimonos (which lacked pockets) as a way of holding their belongings. The Japanese men would place their belongings in containers (sagemonoa) which hung by cords and were secured to the kimono sashes by netsukes. The entire collection was sold for a staggering £4,600.

Teasets are ever popular at our salerooms and we were delighted to offer several choice pieces of Royal Worcester and Shelley. First up, a cased set of Royal Worcester coffee cups and saucers

sold for £750. This was followed by several lots of Shelley – trios, teasets and jelly moulds from a Staffordshire based private collection. Again, these drew significant interest both online and in the room, with the collection totalling just under £8,000.

Other highlights within the sale included a large gilt and four glass calendar mantel clock which sold for £1,500 and a Queen Anne salt glazed mug selling for £2,800. An Art Deco walnut dining suite quadrupled its guide, selling for £2,400 whilst a signed colour print by Lawrence Stephen Lowry sold for £4,400.

The next Fine & Decorative Art sale will be held on 3rd February. Entries are now invited.
