The Penkridge
Home & Antique Sale

Monday 21st August 2006

Richard Winterton Auctioneers held their latest monthly Antique & Home Sale at their Penkridge Auction Rooms on Monday 21st August.

Over 500 lots were offered and over 75% found buyers which in the current ‘sticky’ trading climate was a very pleasing result.

Leading the sale was a single owner private collection of Beswick. Around 200 lots were entered and the collection totaled a pleasing £6000. Included was a model of Nijinsky with Lester Piggott up, two private buyers jockeyed for the lot and it took £310. Other notable lots included an Aberdeen Angus Trio at £420, a Persian cat £230, Fireside fox £200 and a Charolais set at £310.

Interest was created in the horological section with five longcase clocks entered all from private vendors. An eight day brass faced example attracted interest from the London trade. Made by Ashton of Macclesfield a local private buyer took on the trade triumphing at a top estimate £1200. The trade then came back taking the next two longcases at £540 and £460 respectively.

There were no four figure bids in the furniture section but strong interest accounted for a Georgian oak press going over estimate at £560. One further interesting lot was an Arts and Crafts oak hallrobe. Consigned locally it was a typical example with copper panels to the front decorated with stylized flower motifs, crucially lacking a retailer’s stamp it still took a winning bid of £520.

In the ceramics section one lot stood out, found on a routine valuation. Auctioneer Ben Gamble spotted a Majolica teapot covered in dust on a sideboard. Despite a broken spout and damage to the handle the impressed Minton mark underneath helped it fly to £780 delighting the vendor who was going to consign it to the dustbin.

Further highlights included a small 6 lot selection of Nazi militaria from World War II. The collectors market is still very buoyant and interest was received from as far afield as the West Coast of America. However it was British buyers taking the spoils with the selection taking £620.

Huge interest was created by a brass barrel corkscrew, again consigned locally. The vendor had no idea of the value. Having Gothic window style decoration to the barrel two Southern based dealers on the telephone contested it to £580.

The next Home & Antique Sale at the Penkridge Salerooms is to be held on Monday 25th September and entries are now being accepted. For further details or to arrange a free home visit please contact Ben Gamble on 01785 714905 or email .
