JUNE FINE ART & COLLECTORS AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS

Richard Winterton’s two day Fine Art & Collectors Sale held on 27th/28th June included some 1,500 Lots. Specially selected jewellery, watches, silver, coins, medals, glass, ceramics, collectors items, pictures and furniture were on offer sourced from private vendors and estates.

Small items of antique silver such as vinaigrettes snuff boxes and card cases are especially collectable in the current market. Lot 183, a nutmeg grater by Peter and Anne Bateman, hallmarked for London 1798 had been brought into the Derby valuation office. Despite missing the grille, such ‘objects of virtue’ are desirable. Estimated at around £150, keen interest from International buyers resulted in it selling for £400.

Lot 594, undoubtedly one of the finest Victorian coromandel games compendiums to appear at auction recently had the added advantage of retaining most of the original contents, including playing cards and ivory score dials. Estimated at £600-800, it sold to a room buyer totalling £1,500.

Elsewhere, Lot 893, a pair of c.1870 oil paintings by Joseph Horgnies sold for £1,100 and Lot 1062, a Victorian mahogany triple door glazed bookcase sold for £1,850.
