Home & Antique Sale - Tuesday 28th March 2006

Auctioneer's Report

Richard Winterton Fine Art Auctioneers held their monthly Home & Antique Sale at their Penkridge Auction Rooms on Tuesday 28th March 2006. Keen pre-sale interest with many commission bids combined with strong competition on the night resulting in a very successful sale.

Once again Beswick proved popular- a Standing Fox together with three hounds fetched £160. The other good performers in this section were Girl on Jumping Horse (with restorations) £220 and Huntswoman on grey £110.

This time there was an extensive Royal Doulton Section which included the 'Spring Flowers' figurine selling above estimate at £150 and a large flambé owl flying in at £140.

Also generating a lot of interest in the Ceramics section were 5 pieces of Carltonware including a chocolate cup and cover which doubled its estimate to sell at £75. Two Royal Worcester Blush Ivory Jugs reached a respectable £120.

The Silver section gave a reliable performance being topped by an early C20th mahogany oval serving tray with hallmarked silver gallery rail at £220. Also in this section there was excitement over a Mexican gold religious medallion which was won by a bid of £160.

Again some of the more interesting lots were to be found in the Miscellaneous section. Two pairs of Scandinavian Hickory Skis c.1955 slid to £32 and £35 respectively. A George V ceremonial short sword together with WW1 memorabilia reached £200.

This time there was a small picture section which was topped by a set of four coloured mezzotints - £100. A pair of watercolour farmyard scenes - ever popular - doubled estimate at £60.

The final section as always was the furniture containing the usual mix of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian. The most expensive lot of the night was in this section - an impressive mid-Victorian oak four piece bedroom suite which fetched £1850. A mahogany Edwardian five piece bedroom suite settled at £600 and still in round figures a Georgian oak panelled box settle made £500. On the whole the Georgian furniture performed the best although an early C20th oak glazed display cabinet doubled lower estimate at £320.

The next Antique & Home Sale will take place at Penkridge Auction Rooms, Pinfold Lane, Penkridge on Tuesday 25th April at 6.00pm. Viewing Monday 4.00 - 7.00pm and Tuesday from 9.00am.
