SITTING PRETTY!

Richard Winterton Fine Art Auctioneers will be including the illustrated oil painting in their Jewellery & Fine Art Sale on Thursday 22nd November.

The 60cm by 70cm oil painting on canvas is a nineteenth century satirical image of dogs. The master appears to be a standard white Poodle seated at a desk complete with spectacles, while an array of other breeds surround him. The Poodle looks bored whilst the other dogs’ facial expressions range from suspicion to fear, the latter being a black Labrador holding an unopened letter in his mouth. If observed very closely, one dog makes a getaway over a chair in the background. Such humorous paintings where animals are put in human situations were popular with the Victorians and today would be described as satirical. The picture may even represent a political scene. Although unsigned, animal pictures have wide appeal to buyers today especially novelties. This is reflected in the pre- auction estimate of £2,500-3,500.
