RARE GLASS VASE DISCOVERY

  Rare glass vase discovery

A rare and valuable glass vase has been discovered at a local auction house.

The 30cm high ruby coloured glass vase was unearthed by experts while making routine checks in boxes of general items consigned from a local deceased estate at the Lichfield Saleroom of Richard Winterton.

Attributed to the Stourbridge firm of Thomas Webb and dating from c.1880, it is one of the finest examples of the complex technique of cameo glass to appear in the region for some years. Cameo glass was developed by the Romans but revived in England in the nineteenth century. Two or more layers of glass are laminated then carved to make the design in relief. Webb perfected the technique and examples are valuable today. Similar examples can be seen at the Broadfield House Glass Museum in Stourbridge.

Estimated to fetch in the thousands of pounds, the vase is to be offered in the Fine, Decorative Arts & Jewel Sale at Burton on 17th April. Please phone 01543 251081 for details on valuation services in you area.
