DISCOVERY OF RARE MEDALS

A routine valuation visit in a small Staffordshire town resulted in the discovery of a collection of interesting medals, many dating back to the mid nineteenth century. All are being offered for auction in Richard Winterton’s Collectors Sale on 29th May at the Burton Saleroom and the collection is estimated to fetch over £1,200.

The ‘Tutbury haul’ of medals were purchased by the vendor at Seaby’s London during the 1970’s when such things could be bought for £10-20 each.

Highlights from the collection include a China War medal dated 1842 awarded to T. Collier of the Royal Marines estimated to fetch £250-300. This medal was awarded by the British Government in 1843 to all who had taken part in the campaign in China known as the First Opium War which ended with the seizure of Nanking. Also included is an 1869 Abyssinian War Medal to F. Cook, R.M H.M.S Spitfire. The medal was issued due to a campaign resulting from the imprisonment of British subjects by King Theodore of Abyssinia. Casualties were light, two killed and twenty seven wounded. It is estimated to fetch £200-250.

For valuations on all coins and medals, please contact the specialist consultant at Richard Winterton’s on 01283 511224.
