4TH JANUARY 2007 FINE ART SALE HIGHLIGHTS
Richard Winterton’s January 4th Fine Art sale blazed the way for 2007. Held in his
Lichfield premises it was noteworthy as being the first major sale of the year with all
Lots fresh on the market and of impeccable quality.
Early on, Lot 101 a series of World War I medals awarded to a local Burton
hero, including his Distinguished Conduct medal, exceeded what he would have
earned in the conflict, making £1,200.00.
Ceramics enjoyed a break with an 1873 Minton majolica bowl, Lot 223,
making £2,200.00.
Furniture did particularly well with all lots sold. In this section were to be
found-: A Dutch walnut bureau of bombe form £3,000.00, a 1920’s oak dining
suite in the Crafts style £1,800.00, whilst an ornate console table of about 1850 in
carved walnut (transmitted from the Folkestone area) made £2,800.00.
Richard definitely proved that the death of ‘Brown Furniture’ has been greatly
exaggerated. A mid 18th Century oak bureau realised £1,150.00 and a neat oak
George III chest of drawers £800.00. Dresser bases and gate-leg tables were in
Demand as well as coffers and period fruitwood furniture.
Elsewhere an elegant ‘Deco’ diamond chip brooch changed hands at £1,100.00 and
a Lowry, signed print, Lot 392, made £2,300.00.
An important historical archive of Quaker manuscripts – 18th and 19th
century – realised just under £3,500.00 in total.
The keynote of this sale was clarity condition and quality, turnover was rapid. The next Lichfield Fine Art Sale is in April. Entries are currently being invited.
