Mauretainia

Richard Winterton Auctioneers are thrilled to have a very interesting single owner maritime collection in their forthcoming Spring Fine Art Sale to be held 22nd March 2017. Of particular interest is a cased model RMS Mauretania built over four years by Mr Fred Mews of Yorkshire. It is a copy of the 1906 example by Swan Hunter and Wigham, Richardson at Wallsend-on-Tyne for the Cunard steam ship firm. The same model was previously sold for £162,000. The Mauretania was the fastest ship at the time travelling between Liverpool and New York and was also the sister ship to the Lusitania. As well as the model of the ship, we have a 2nd class swivel chair with plaque inscribed HMS Mauretania to back support. Also up for auction are cased models of Barquentine Waterwitch 1871, America, St Sun IV built by Eagle Hull 1915 and St Kingston Olivine H209 built 1930 by Cook, Welton and Gemmell Ltd Beverley. On top of the cased examples, there is a large collection of uncased models, pictures, reference books and ephemera and maritime effects.

The collection, consigned in its entirety has come to us at Fradley from Chelsea. Amongst the lots on offer are some really interesting reference books including The Cunard Turbine-Driven Quadruple-Screw Atlantic Liner ‘Mauretainia’, a fifty years retrospect of The Wallsend Slipway and Engineering Co Limited and Masters of Maritime Art Loan Exhibition Catalogues, 1936-1937, The Portrait of Peter Pett and the Sovereign of the Seas, 1930.
