‘Antiques Road Show’ at Tean Hall Mills a fantastic success!

Treasures and historical artefacts were unearthed as people flocked to the ‘Antiques Road Show’ at Tean Hall Mills.

The event was held at the beautiful restored historic seventeenth century manor house, Old Tean Hall, Upper Tean, Staffordshire on May 13th.

Lichfield based Richard Winterton Auctioneers hosted the event. Richard Winterton and Adrian Rathbone, from the auctioneers, were on hand to value the variety of items which local people had brought.

The most interesting pieces of the night included a silver dish which had been given to a former Mill worker from the company as a thank you for long service. It was valued at around £600.

The inscription on the dish read: ‘Presented to Mary Ann Stanner by the directors of J & N Phillips and Co Ltd as a mark of appreciation for her long and loyal service 1879 to 1933.’

The dish was brought in by Celia Roberts, of Cheadle. She said: “The dish has been handed down through my family, it’s quite complicated where it has been passed from. It’s lovely to think of the history of it and that it’s connected to the Mill. I’m really pleased with the outcome, I’m going to keep hold of it.”

Another valuable item was a Liberty mirror with Ruskin decorative pieces, dated around 1905. Richard Winterton valued this at approximately £2,000.

Other items included a Victorian Press, a hand made owl clock form the 1920s, some coloured glass from the 1960s, a pair of hand painted plates of pigeon racing from Cheadle Town from 1910, some Japanese wooden figures also from 1910 valued at £500 and various pieces of gold jewellery which collectively were valued at more than £1,000.

Ivy Brunt, a former Mill worker and local historian Noel Green of the Tean and Checkley Historical Society, were at the open evening displaying old pictures and memorabilia from the Mill including wooden blocks for tape and samples of tape and a weaving hook.

Richard Winterton said: “The event was a great success, it was fantastic how many people turned up and the variety of items they had brought.
“The connection with the history of the Mill, where the event was held and the historical pieces really made it special.”

The Old Hall at Tean, built around 400 years ago in 1613, but now restored and renovated to become a beautiful four bedroom family home, was opened for people to view at the event.

Charles Collier, Managing Director of Bovale, developer of Tean Hall Mills, explains: “The idea of an ‘Antiques Road Show’ style event was just a bit of fun, but at the same time it gave people the opportunity both to view the unique old manor house at Tean and to benefit from the expert insight of Richard Winterton Auctioneers, who have been established in this area for over 150 years.

“It was a pleasure to welcome all the visitors and uncover a few exciting family treasures along the way!”
