Icon of our Skies

19th November 2009 Press Release

Ever fancied owning your own Spitfire? Well now you can (or as good as) when this superb ¾ scale model is offered for public auction on 9th December.

The Spitfire is a single seat fighter aircraft used by the RAF and other allied countries during WWII. It was designed as a short range interceptor aircraft by R.J. Mitchell and achieved legendary status during the Battle of Britain. After that it became the backbone of RAF Fighter Command. Loved by pilots and the public alike, the Spitfire is not only an aviation icon but also a symbol of Art Deco design at its best.

This four meter long model, homage to the original, was constructed recently by a Lichfield enthusiast with a fascination with the WWII aircraft. The frame is made of timber which has been clad in sheet aluminium and then painted in realistic camouflage livery. The flaps, rudder and propeller are fully operational. The wingspan is 5.4 meters.

It will be offered in Richard Winterton’s 9th December evening Collectors Sale at the Lichfield Auction Centre. Contact the Auctioneers for further information on 01543 251081.
